Water pollution is a major global issue profoundly impacting sustainable development of society. Fueled by high nutrient and chemical loads from agricultural and urban run-off, warmer temperatures, and changes in rainfall patterns under a changing climate, increasing sediment loads and algal blooms have become an increasing concern in recent years. The lab focuses to develop an operational tool to remotely monitor water quality, including chlorophyll-a levels and suspended sediments for regional water conservation and watershed management using hyperspectral and thermal imaging from proximity sensors, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and satellites. We expect this work will be of use to long-term watershed remediation planning and enable more focused management for water sustainability.
